Views from Dutch trains - Album Release tour - Mallet Collective
"Views from Dutch Trains" is an inspiring musical project that highlights the social and environmental impact of train travel in the Netherlands. Organized by Mallet Collective, this project combines the power of music with the message of sustainable mobility. By recording a CD of new Dutch compositions, the project translates the experience of train travel into a musical journey that calls for a more environmentally conscious lifestyle.
Train travel is not only a way to get around, but also a reflection of the beauty of the Dutch landscape, the rhythm of daily life, and the urgent need to reduce our ecological footprint. These compositions bring the listener closer to the experience of train travel - from the tranquility of vast meadows to the vibrancy of urban stations. The project invites us to consider the role of train travel as an environmentally friendly alternative to car and air travel, and sustainability
Featuring new works by Misha, Antal and Jo Sporck, Anthony Fiumara, Jacob ter Veldhuis and Dordtsche composer Jannum Kruidhof.

Verdi Requiem & Mallet Collective

In our Italian baroque programme, we alternate swinging love songs with cantatas by for example Scarlatti or Porpora. Songs for only voice and lute by Caccini are mixed with grooving songs by Frescobaldi and Sances – all about love and its struggles, of course. They are built around a longer cantata (15’00) by Scarlatti or Porpora, in which affects of love, love sickness or jealousy are central. All Italian temperament!
53 years and no religion and no telescope - Mallet Collective
This program is more than just a performance of Bach on marimba. It bridges times and places, traditions and innovations, cultures and identities. Bach's music, once composed for harpsichord, is now played on an instrument that was not recognized in classical music until long after his death. This transcends the boundaries of time and space, just as globalization changes our world and challenges us to find new forms of connection.
"53 Years and No Religion and No Telescope" demonstrates that music is a powerful tool for dialogue with the past and reflection on today's issues. The Mallet Collective invites the audience to consider what we can learn from Bach in a world that is constantly changing.

What drives humans to explore? In her new composition The Song of Koios, composer Mathilde Wantenaar gives musical expression to human curiosity in an adventurous journey filled with science, history, imagination, and wonder — for young and old alike.
The star of composer Mathilde Wantenaar (1993) is rapidly rising. In this monumental new work—a world premiere—she takes us into a world where science and music meet.
Koios means “to ask questions.” The Song of Koios — an evening-length work presented under the title Dear Professor — centers on the unstoppable scientific curiosity of humans, which can lead to both progress and destruction. Wantenaar composed three brand-new movements as a continuation of her successful chamber opera Dear Professor Einstein (2022), for which librettist Willem Bruls used letters from children to Albert Einstein. Fascinating figures such as Aristotle, Alexander von Humboldt, Charles Darwin, Marie Curie, and Albert Einstein take us on a journey through time. With visuals, words, and music, the Netherlands Chamber Choir and ensemble bring to life humanity’s quest for knowledge and meaning, in the stunningly simple yet highly effective staging and direction by Yannick Verweij and Kenza Koutchoukali.
The Song of Koios is an adventurous journey of discovery for young and old alike—from the very beginning to the unknown end—a search for the secrets of creation.

Waterworks @September ME festival
An (under)water Concert about connection and sustainability.
Waterworks, a project by Mallet Collective composed by Aart Strootman is a mini (under)water opera where you can listen floating with your ears underwater, but also hear a "different" concert from the water's edge.
Water, as a source of life and a symbol of connection, is the focus of this concert and is uniquely interwoven with music.
The music features fluid movements, wave patterns and the unpredictable nature of water. The use of melodic percussion and resonance in the wet, acoustically interesting space, creates a sound world that immerses you in both the beauty, and the power of water. The setting in (and around) a swimming pool, a public space where people gather, also symbolizes the social responsibility we have together in protecting our shared resources.

Song of the Earth S t a r g a z e + Dirty Projectors
Unconventional song cycle unites classical and indie rock
What connects Mahler and The Beach Boys? Contemporary ensemble Stargaze and American band Dirty Projectors answer that question with Song of the Earth. This kaleidoscopic song cycle reflects on the cyclical nature of life and death. Composer and Dirty Projectors leader David Longstreth drew inspiration from Mahler’s classic Das Lied von der Erde and Brian Wilson’s ingenious Beach Boys songs.
Dirty Projectors’ unique blend of dazzling, unconventional guitar work and layered vocal harmonies has kept the band on the indie rock map for the past twenty years. They have collaborated with stars such as Solange, Björk, and David Byrne. Dirty Projectors is now teaming up with Stargaze, an ensemble that has previously wowed the Muziekgebouw with ground-breaking collaborations with musicians like Terry Riley, Mica Levi, and Lee Ranaldo.

Mallet Collective @Oranjewoud festival - Waterworks
MALLET COLLECTIVE PERFORMS WATERWORKS (premiere) by Aart Strootman
As a visitor to this concert, you choose a "wet" or "dry" seat, take your place in or around the water, and for just under fifteen minutes you are literally and figuratively immersed in a bath of sound.
Composer Aart Strootman has been conducting unique research into sound material and the development of new instruments for many years. He sees these as an important link between composer and performer. Strootman is therefore the person of choice for a commission exploring the properties of (under) water music. Waterworks is a follow-up to the pilot Floating that Strootman performed at the 2018 festival in the hotel swimming pool of Parkhotel Tjaarda. In the latest project, he uses tubular bells. Rein tuned, tone-fixed sound bars stand next to or hang partially in the pool, or float or slide in the water. This creates different kinds of sounds.
In the composition, the pipes enter into a dialogue with the water and become part of it. Their pitches are tuned with extreme precision, creating a rich range of overtones. Acoustic phenomena such as beatings can also be heard. These are interferences of two very closely spaced tones creating rhythmic patterns. These beatings and their solutions as the tones merge back together, create tension and relaxation in this work, just as dissonants and consonants do in traditional music.
Waterworks can be heard 24 times in the Swimming Pool of Parkhhotel Tjaarda on Friday, May 31, Saturday, June 1 and Sunday, June 2 at:
10:00h, 10:45h, 11:30h, 13:30h, 14:15h, 15:00h, 15:45h and 16:30h.

A crisis of responsibility
In 2021, a Dutch court ruled that Shell was legally responsible for its contribution to climate change. In The Shell Trial, the various voices in the climate debate are heard and it becomes increasingly clear that we will not make any progress by endlessly pointing the finger at one another. The message of this topical opera is that the climate crisis is above all a crisis of responsibility.

’Here around the corner’, a braid of beautiful, cinematic songs about one (village) community. About a street full of newcomers, a church without a congregation, the first day of school, the last bridge keeper, the buzzing Christmas market, the silent river, the agree, the disagree, the sudden standstill, the inevitable progress. It became a surprising and moving portrait of the present time, told in adventurously arranged Dutch-language compositions.

TEMKO – Entropy
‘Who are we?’ Ten years ago, this simple question was the starting point of the trio TEMKO. Several musical worlds come together in the ensemble: contemporary composition, electronic sound design, improvisation, prog rock, ambient and microtonality. The trio is a textbook example of the interaction between composer and performer: on stage, the sketches composed by guitarist Aart Strootman invite percussionist Ramon Lormans and bassist and electronics specialist Fred Jacobsson to add their own ideas. In Entropy, listeners can relax and drift away on the trio’s hypnotic soundwaves, in which there is a great deal to discover.
